Info

There are two things that protect a turbocharged engine: a wastegate and fuel cut. The wastegate works by letting air out of the system to prevent the turbo from spooling too much. Fuel cut is meant as a last ditch effort to save your engine. If an excessive boost pressure is sensed, the engine can completely cut the supply of fuel to the engine. This should prevent damage to the engine, but it also feels like the car hit a wall, and it is not something you want to make a habit of.

Opinion

Some people simply disable the fuel cut and rely entirely on their wastegate, but I think that's a bad choice. Considering you can build your own fuel cut defenser for $15 of parts and that it has the chance to protect your engine from thousands of dollars of damage, why not build one?
